This is slightly late - I’m writing this on my last day in New York due to me being tired and sleepy last night. I need a break from this holiday!
Due to the couple of days when I was at deaths door I skipped the Bronx Zoo but decided to head out there on my last full day here, and I’m so glad I did. Probably the best Zoo I’ve ever been to and for the most part one of the better ones for providing spaces for the animals to hide and explore.
The walk from the Subway to the Zoo, through the human exhibit
A tree kangaroo. Didn’t know there was such a thing, and other than being red and furry I still have no idea what they look like.
The most stylish monkey I’ve ever seen - look at that hairdo!
This lot made it look like I wandered into the bad part of the zoo. I half expected them to fly
Tuckered out Tapirs
I got the impression I was being watched…
Quite a few of the exhibits are cageless, thankfully this wasn’t one of them.
I am never going any place this thing lives.
This guy swung along and just hung out, possibly posing
The Bronx river, hard to believe this freezes over in Winter
The lady with the tie dyed pants didn’t look very amused when I said “that’s a whole lotta handbags”
The Monorail! The driver did a very informative running commentary throughout the trip. More like a sprinting commentary, it was really hard to understand most of what he said.
A tiger was somewhere in front of me, maybe somewhere in this photo. The train didn’t slow down very much and the tiger was unhelpfully moving about so I just fired off the camera randomly.
Happy the elephant, she was a bit more lively and actually happy looking that this photo makes out
A rhino with sunscreen on his face, how the hell do they manage to do this?
A red panda. Could have been a tree kangaroo as far as I could tell.
Some of the weirdest creatures I saw. Bronx Zoo is huge, it took me 7 hours to walk around most of it, but not all. Why would you bring roller cases? And why would each person need one? Why?
Pretty laid back looking chap, clearly just wanted a cuddle.
Furry dumplings
Double Brown bear!
Rhinos without sunscreen
A Freedom Budgie. I think Americans like this bird, it seems to be all over the place.
You can’t go wrong with seals, although of about 10 photos I took this is the only one that was in focus, damn things moving about so much.
I want one!
Madagascar Mongoose - near the top of animals that are awesome
Red Lemur - not a tree kangaroo or red panda.
A happy snake - you could see it’s last meal half way down it
There are small frogs all over this photo, and all of them are highly toxic to the touch.
Standard Giraffe
Forest Giraffe aka Okapi
Reminds me I have to go back to work soon
He didn’t look like he was putting up with anyone’s shit.
Not impressed with the current batch of tourists
So much more intelligence that a few of the people I’ve seen over the past few weeks, and all of the French.
Feeding time - the last dinner of the trip and I had to have Popeyes one last time. Apologies for the half eaten wings, but I needed to capture the crispy coating and delicious mash & gravy.
At least one more update to come, once I’m at the airport checked in and waiting for the flight having wrestled three suitcases and bits of carry-on. I took a walk this morning down 6th and up 5th Ave to fill in time between checking out of the hotel and getting a taxi to the airport so there’s some bits and pieces from that to put up.
