Today was supposed to be raining all day so I planned to do the Natural History Museum and National Art Gallery. Of course it only really rained while I was outside but it was a nice change. I read today that someone died hiking in the Grand Canyon a couple of days ago due to the heat which doesn’t surprise me.
They have put out extreme weather warnings every day with notices all over the place specifically warning against doing prolonged physical activity. I guess she enjoyed her freedumb while it lasted.
This is suspended above the main cafe which is both excellent and unnerving.
A bloody great bit of crystal
I was standing here, and I could hear a horrible crunching noise. I looked up and saw this, the leopard “eating” and crunching on the antelopes bones. Nice.
A wide range of human ancestors skulls. Going by the look, I swear I’ve met some before
Allosaurus, you can tell by the shape of the frontal and anterior lobular falanges.
Yes, I read the name on the sign.
Elephants.
Not too sure what was going on here, but I didn’t want to find out.
Kill it with fire.
This, according to the sign next to it is DNA. Lots of it.
The Hope Diamond - I hope they’ve got some good insurance, it’s worth $400 million
The uncut Oppenheimer Diamond one of the largest uncut diamonds in the world at 253 carats and the Portuguese Diamond at 127 carats and is apparently the largest cut diamond in the world.
Currently extremely rare and illegal to buy - a moon rock
Loads and loads of gold. By god they have a lot of stuff here. They have cases of all sorts of minerals and elements, but honestly different types of granite and sandstone really aren’t that interesting.
After a few laps of the Natural History Museum it was next door to the National Art Museum. This was the same as the Met Art Museum in NY - bloody confusing to find your way around and so easy to miss entire sections because you have to back track and do strange loops.
The Thinker by Rodin - one of the very few statues I actually recognised.
This was really cool but the name was ironic considering the hellova racket the security staff were making gossiping and cackling about Gloria and how she have nasty feet and Davis, well he ain’t be coming around no more and on and on and on.
Ginevra de Benci by Leonardo da Vinci - at least he finished this one (refer the da Vinci in the NY trip)
An indoor fountain in the art gallery, because why not.
I spotted a painting from my favourite artist immediately - I love these.
(It’s Johan Christian Dahl)
A traditional and modern selfie
This just doesn’t show the amazing colours in Monet’s painting - in a room of his works this one stood out
I’m outside so it started raining just after I took this. I also saw an FBI car race past with lights and siren going. The real deal!
We have some pulled pork, brisket, burnt ends and beans, coleslaw and cornbread with bourbon butter, accompanied by a DC Brau Pilsner and lemonade - at the Hill Country Texas BBQ. These BBQ restaurants claim to be smoked in traditional (insert Southern State name here) style but as far as I can tell they all are pretty much the same, with the difference being how juicy or dry the meat is. This one was particularly good.
I made it all the way to the F.B.I. Well, I made it to the outside of the building.
I have never heard of the FBI Police - I need to know more, and have a TV series about them, possibly with aliens.
The Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall. It really is an odd assortment of buildings here.
Tomorrow is my last full day in DC so I plan to go and see the other far end of the Mall with the Lincoln Memorial, reflecting pool and other touristy photographable stuff.
