My stroll last night ended up being a bit of a hike for about 40 minutes while I did a video call with Olivia & Keegan to show then the sights of Friday night Vegas.
Moon over the NY NY roller coaster
Bit more full on than the dirty old local TAB showing the hounds racing in Cambridge.
I found Guy Fieri’s restaurant so that seemed as good a place as any. Awesome staff and some pretty good food as well.
The Big Dipper - slow cooked beef with cheese & onion rings (that counts as a vegetable doesn’t it?)
It came with a beef concoction to dip the sandwich in but I’d more than likely end up with it all down my front so I avoided it.
Hells Kitchen. I looked to see if I could get a table at any of the Ramsay restaurants but not a chance.
I started the day off late after a fantastic sleep, which was a good thing because I needed it today, it was extra hot and lots of walking.
Sunrise over Vegas. Then I went back to bed.
Another off the list - the shop from the Pawn Stars series. A pretty well run spot, they have guys in the parking lot directing traffic and parking. Nobody was actually paying any attention to them, and their directions didn’t seem to relate to anything the cars were doing but their efforts were noted.
The shop, a lot of cool stuff in here and all of it completely impractical to drag halfway around the world (John Wick movie frames with car licence plate) or not really my thing. The rocket exhaust from one of the Apollo landings was pretty cool but not really a practical buy at $30,000.
They’ve set up a shopping area across the lot from the shop, and the smell of Rick’s BBQ was too much to resist.
Pickles and green onions, so nutritious. Also burnt ends and brisket with loaded mashed potato, so tasty.
After this I headed to The Venetian which was an insane collection of excess and more excess. I guess it was just like Venice and a random collection of Italian styled buildings spread out over a crazy winding maze of walkways and canals.
The entrance, so modest and functional.
The hallway to the casino
Gondolas and tourists. Because Vegas.
One of the walkways
These are all inside. You can see a helium balloon on the roof just to the left.
This was when a “Venetian” band started playing, loudly. This absolutely destroyed any conversations people were having. Being indoors it echoed around the place so it was just a complete mess of noise.
Just like the real thing. Apart from the packaged cake slices that were the same as the vending machines.
Things to buy. No prices on anything which is always a bad sign. I bought a chocolate cannoli, it cost $7 and it wasn’t great. Apparently you can make pastry cream grainy.
For some stupid reason I decided to walk back to the hotel, took about an hour in 43c+ heat.
The hotels are weird in that they are open to anyone to come in or walk through. This is one of the more subtle entrances.
Tonight was the Penn & Teller show at the Penn & Teller theatre in the Rio Hotel. Dinner was at the All American Bar & Grill and not by choice. There was a booked out Vietnamese restaurant and this place.
My new favourite beer, and the first time I’d been given the bottle so at last I got a photo of it.
A surprisingly good Chicken Alfredo with a pretty rubbery parmesan crisp
The seat was pretty good, 3rd row from the front. The thing on the stage is a carafe of jelly beans, and above that is Penn playing Bass as part of the pre-show music.
I’m off to DC tomorrow via Denver so I’ll probably write down a description of the show while I’m waiting at the airport - it was utterly bewildering and amazing what they pulled off, and I can’t even begin to work out how they did some of the tricks.
